Chapter 5

Engineer listened in to the inhibitor room conversation via his headset from within Office Building 52375.
The Fugitive continued, "I mean, the way it looks, we could be dealing with a new Opposition Member, and we don't even know it. Wait. I'm getting something here. H-Hold on."
        "Huh?" asked Sayaka.
        "J-Just wait."
        "For reals?"
        Kshzzzt!
There was the garbling of a signal scramble, followed by a different conversation between two young women.

"Don't tell me you're planning on coming, too?" asked Kurisu, who was at Drogentote Medical healing someone with the Vaccinator medigun.
"I've spent hours calculating every possible danger and am well prepared. There's no turning back now," replied the young pink-haired woman, known as Bubblegum. She wore a pink dress and a distinct circlet crown, but despite having a human appearance, she didn't look exactly like how she normally would.
        KkkCrack.
Suddenly, the Vaccinator crackled and stopped pumping out its stream of energy.
"This was a mistake," sighed Kurisu.
"It'll be fine. We've got science!" Bubblegum declared.
"It's not that easy. I need all kinds of materials first."
        Pew pew POW!
Suddenly, a time-screw sent Yutaka right next to Bubblegum. Though Yutaka's hair was back to its magenta-pink shade, she was still in her corrupted pink outfit.
"Whoa! What the dip?!" exclaimed Bubblegum.
        "Sorry about that," said Yutaka.
Out of nowhere, Bubblegum pointed out, "I'm sorry, but I don't think you make a good blonde."
"Oh, no, you guys don't have to worry about me. I'll be fine! This happens all the time."
Kurisu was too busy examining the Vaccinator to interrupt the other two.
"Possibly..." Bubblegum said as she took a piece of paper with a sketch she did of one of the mental inhibitor machines and some rough electric bolts coming off it. She showed it to Yutaka and continued, "We won't know for a couple of days. In the meantime, you need to get plenty of rest."

        Kshzzzt!
        "Hell," Engineer groaned.
        Whoosh.
"Engineer!" called Spy, who wore his headset-mounted-cap on top of his balaclava. "We need to go back!" He handed over the camera-equipped PDA and raised a printed-out photo in front of Engineer's goggles.
On the photo was a clipboard being examined by Mami and Homura. It had a copy of the coastline map that they had been looking at. On top was a written note that said, "I can help your friends get out of the prison. Come see me. Once we meet up, stay quiet!" and an arrow that pointed to another sketch of a mental inhibitor. There was another sketch, but it was blocked from view by one of Mami's hair curls.
        "Whew! Not bad!" whistled Engineer.

*   *   *

"Just take care of my sister."
Those were the first words Engineer and Spy heard when they arrived at the inhibitor room.
Four people were in front of the primary inhibitor. Elsa, who spoke her demand, was in her ice-blue dress as opposed to the green spring-themed one the team saw her in during the battle against Strength. She was joined by Mami and Homura, both in their magical girl outfits, as they handed a clipboard-- the one in the photo-- over to a gasmasked officer in a uniform that had dark brown patches throughout.
However, Engineer and Spy couldn't see the mask's design too clearly, but they did notice its glowing yellow circular lenses.
Engineer handed Spy his camera-equipped PDA. Upon receiving it, Spy cloaked and became invisible.
        Whoosh.
Engineer couldn't help but chuckle once he saw that Mami wore the glasses he left for her inside the Mini-Dispenser months ago. He then quickly ducked behind Inhibitor 3 without another thought.
The Elite Officer tapped on the message on the clipboard and then gestured toward the shield on Homura's forearm.
Elsa, who stood between Mami and Homura, noted, "This will be nice."
Homura shifted her glare to Elsa and frowned.
        BZZZZT!
The viewscreen of the inhibitor behind the Elite Officer briefly lit up red.

WARNING: Security breach detected

As a peculiar blue-haired digital girl inside the viewscreen tried to peek past the text and wave her arms to draw attention, the magical girls and their royal ally became concerned with other matters.
        KSHHHHKKKK!
An electric bolt from the damaged, smoke-pumping inhibitor to the left narrowly missed the group.
"I'm sorry, but could you not tell the others for a little while?" Homura prompted the two beside her.
"I-i-it doesn't matter, just..." countered Elsa.
"Please. I think it will be safer if we pretend we haven't discovered anything."
"No..." Elsa's weakened protest essentially became a gasp.
Homura determinedly stepped up to the Elite Officer and stood sideways with her shield toward him.
The Elite Officer then affixed a small component onto the shield between the central shutter and one of the smaller windows. The component was roughly rectangular and had a glowing red light on it.
        KSHHKK!
        Another bolt shot past.
Engineer effectively bounced up to try to peek at the group, but his short height kept him hidden. Just then, the camera-PDA slid to a stop right beside him, causing him to yelp.
Mami and Elsa looked behind them, but they couldn't see anyone. They had no time to notice the fallen PDA on the ground; in the chaos, Homura pulled Mami over, causing Elsa to catch Mami's hand into hers.
        RRRING RRRING!
The team's ringtone sounded, but no one was in the right state to openly answer the Fugitive's call.
Homura then snatched Elsa's other wrist with her left hand while she grabbed onto her shield with her right.
        "Hey!" yelled Elsa.
        RRRING RRRING!
With every member of the three grabbing onto each other, the Elite Officer punched the inhibitor behind him, causing a signal scramble.
        Kshzzzt!
He then gave a thumbs-up. In an instant, the next bolt that shot out from the damaged inhibitor deflected off the primary inhibitor and right at the group just as Homura cranked her shield.
        KSSHHHHHHWHOOSH!
        WWWwwwhhhSSSSSSHHHHHH...
Mami, Homura, Elsa, and the Elite Officer vanished as the loud blue portal of a time-screw took their place. The gusting echoes of the portal faded with it.
Spy reappeared from his cloak and was sitting on the floor.
        "That was unfortunate!" he groaned.
        RRRING RRRING!
Engineer, who safely retrieved his PDA, tapped his headset to answer the call.
        "Yeah?"
"Engineer, what is going on over there!? Say something!" exclaimed an exasperated Fugitive.

*   *   *

        Date indeterminable.
When Homura opened her eyes, she found herself sprawled against a wall. Suddenly, the shutters on her shield clanked shut.
        Kzhkkk!
Homura gasped. Mami and Elsa, who were just nearby, looked at her.
"Where is this place?" muttered Homura.
"Don't you see?" replied Elsa in a near-whisper, as she gestured at the dark and dank shower hall that surrounded them.
They had arrived inside the Nova Prospekt prison, through the barrier that kept it apart from the outside world. But even they weren't totally sure the gasmasked men had taken Anna and two other girls here.
They noticed that the Elite Officer had been knocked out in front of them.
Elsa muttered to herself, "Get it together..." She blinked, turned to Mami and asked her, "Are you sure I can leave you in charge?"
"Yes, really!" answered Mami with a smile as she summoned one of her intricately-patterned muskets and sent it out toward the nearby hallway.
"Wait. What is that?" Elsa asked as she pointed ahead of her.
Mami winked toward that direction, causing the musket to blast the blue-tinted gasmasked officer waiting there.
        BLAM!
        "Krh--"
        BEEEEEEP.
Without hesitation, Mami summoned another musket from her skirt and set it off against another gasmasked officer in the hall.
        BLAM!
        "Kah--"
        BEEEEEEP.
The defeated officers landed into a rocky tunnel in the hallway floor that was dug from the outside years ago.
Mami and Elsa went out of the shower area and pressed onward, making sure to bring out some more muskets to scout ahead. Homura was not too far behind, trying not to let show her worry about the component on her shield along the way.

        April 17, 2015.
"Yo, what's up?" FemScout asked the Fugitive through the primary inhibitor.
"Well, after the thing with Yutaka today, you know, that Corrupted girl," said the unseen commander, "there was a security breach, and a chunk of inhibitor room footage from it got erased. Only thing I could find was one of the Time Police walking in before the thing got cut off. Engineer and Spy were getting something ready to show us, so I want you to get them here as soon as you can."
"Gotcha." FemScout then turned away and began to speak into her headset. "Yo, hardhat! Need help here!"

*   *   *

        BLAM!
        "Grh--"
        BEEEEEEP.
Another officer with a blue-tinted outfit slid along the hall in front of the printed black sign on the wall reading "NOVA PROSPEKT A7".
The group of three stopped and looked to the left into the cellblock. They heard a young blonde-haired girl shrieking a complaint out of the open cell on the first level, which was being guarded by two gasmasked men.
"This is beyond lame! It's absurd!"
A push of Chitoge's leg to the head of one of the men sent him to the floor.
        CRASH.
        BEEEEEEP.
The other man turned around and pointed his submachine gun at Chitoge, but a blast from another of Mami's muskets took him out.
        BLAM!
        "Ghh--"
        BEEEEEEP.
Chitoge then noticed the group who stopped by, then took another look at the gasmasked officer she took out by herself. She pointed at that officer and told the group in a near-whisper while looking away, "Oh, but... Promise me you won't tell a soul, okay?"
        WHOOSH!
Homura appeared behind Chitoge and spoke. "I wonder what kind of friends you have, then."
        Chitoge yelped in surprise.
"What do you think you're doing?" asked Homura.
        "Promise me," insisted Chitoge.

Under Engineer's supervision, two robots that roughly resembled him in silhouette set themselves up into positions at the inhibitor room with different shotguns in hand.
        "Y'all ready?" asked Engineer.
"Heck yes!" responded one robot, with a blue tinge throughout and one hand painted yellow.
"Hold this point!" affirmed the other, which was gray throughout but had both hands painted yellow.
"Cowboy up!" the robots called out in unison.
"Whoo-hoo!" cheered Engineer in glee, just before someone tapped him on the shoulder.
It was Nagisa Momoe, who then pointed at the papers he had. Engineer held them out, and the paper on top had a frame-grab of what Spy filmed while cloaked: the meeting between Mami, Homura, and Elsa with a gasmasked officer whose mask had glowing yellow lenses.
"Well?" asked Engineer as he pointed to Mami on the photo.
Nagisa M. nodded quickly but silently.

*   *   *

        KrkkkkkkBLAM!
        "Grh--"
        "Guh--"
        BEEEEEEP.
Two more blue-tinted officers, stiff as statues, flew against the wall at the upper stairwell while covered in frost.
"We certainly gave them a chilly reception," noted Elsa.
        Krkrkrkrkrkr...
She and Mami dodged some gunfire from the officers that rounded the nearby corner, but Mami's rifles arrived just in time to take them down.
        BLAM! BLAM!
        "Krg--"
        "Ugr--"
        BEEEEEEP.
Elsa stood up and nodded once at Mami.

*   *   *

The unseen Fugitive was now talking to Engineer over the inhibitor comms.
"There was that girl with light blue hair," said the Fugitive. "Sinon, was it? Just wanted to let you know she's around here somewhere, and I think she's gonna seek us out."
Engineer raised his gloved hand to his chin.
The Fugitive changed topics. "But yeah, I think Miss Ené here's gotten interested in that Nagisa over there. Ené, you can come see her now."
"Ah? You mean it? You really mean it?! Yahoo! You're too kind!" exclaimed a delighted Ené as she appeared onto the otherwise-blank viewscreen.
Without being prompted, Nagisa M. and Ené bowed and waved at each other.
But if the two robot Engineers standing guard didn't understand why the girls waved the way they did, then neither could Engineer himself.
        Whoosh.
"Mon dieu," groaned Spy as soon as he reappeared from his cloak. He had to perform another facepalm upon noticing that people were waving their hands in such a manner again.

*   *   *

        Krkkkkkk...
        BEEEEEEP.
A gasmasked man at the hallway entrance became covered in frost and toppled over, solid as a rock.
Anna and Yuudachi were still in their dark cell while two men stood guard with submachine guns just outside the worn-out door.
"It doesn't matter!" cried Anna. "You have friends who are--"
"I wonder which fleet we'll end up in next, poi," sighed Yuudachi.
        "You're distracting me."
        Krkkkkkk...
        BEEEEEEP.
Another gasmasked man covered in frost crashed into the hallway.
Yuudachi proudly tapped her leg-mounted torpedoes and tried to walk out of the cell on her own, but Anna stopped her.
        "Uh-uh-uh--"
The two men guarding the cell pointed their guns at the two girls, but soon found themselves iced up and unable to fire.
        Krkkkkkk.
Now clear of the cold air burst, Anna and Yuudachi nodded to each other. They casually stepped out of the cell and knocked over the two gasmasked men by punching them to the ground.
        CRASH.
        BEEEEEEP.
        "Anna!"
Elsa had arrived through the small rectangular archway at the upper cellblock level, pleased to see Anna again.
Anna was confused as to why her royal sister acted like she hadn't seen her in months, but replied, "Whoa, Elsa... I'm really sorry I let you down."
"No, it's okay. You don't have to apologize." She then looked over to Mami, who entered through the archway as well, and commended her, "You know, maybe you should join my royal guard. You're very good at stopping evildoers."
"Guess there's no helping it," giggled Mami.

Homura and Chitoge walked along the upper-level hallway past the stairwell.
Chitoge spoke, "What I hate is the kind of guy who keeps brooding over past mistakes and other things that he can't possibly change."
Homura nodded as they entered through the small archway. She and Chitoge saw that Anna and Yuudachi were safely out of their cell with no one guarding them, and that Mami and Elsa were safe, too.
But as soon as they did, there was overlapping radio speech in the hallway behind the group.
        "10-98."
        "10-98."
        "10-98."
        A jailbreak.
There was a large group of gasmasked officers pointing their submachine guns into the small archway to the upper cellblock. Most were wearing the dark blue tinge, and some of them near the front had angular riot shields. At the back of the group was Commander Asahina, whose expression was very stern.
"In position now. Confirm priority 1 sighted," called in a voice.
Despite this, Yuudachi blankly stared at Chitoge in a gasp, almost as if there was something in particular about her.
"Come on," prompted Anna as she tapped Yuudachi on her shoulder.

*   *   *

Spy and Engineer held out, toward the primary inhibitor viewscreen, the few frame-grab printouts they filmed from the meeting between Mami's group and the Elite Officer.
"Why didn't they tell us about this?" growled the Fugitive. "We could've helped. I mean, we did screw them up a long time ago, but we could've helped."
The digital blue-haired girl, mischievous as she was, could only mimic a zipping motion along her mouth.
The Fugitive continued, "At least Spy told us... finally. But without that thing on Homura's shield, we can't just walk into the prison. Not that we can move as fast as Homura, anyway."
"Hey!" yelled Scout and FemScout, who had arrived at the inhibitors not too long ago.
"You got anything smart to say-- Crap." Scout caught himself.
The Fugitive gave his thanks despite Scout's near-insult. "Okay, well, Thank you-- all of you-- for being here today and finally letting me know what went on during today's security breach. Engineer, I just want you and your robots to stay here and keep watch."
        Engineer nodded.
"Oh, and... all of you, if I don't see you in the next month, there's that thing I wanna meet up at, all right?"

*   *   *

Homura tapped the red light on the shield component. "Hurry!" she prompted.
At that moment, out in the prison hallway, Asahina signaled forward, and the group of officers began to fire into the cellblock.
        Krkrkrkrkrkrkrkrkr...!
Elsa quickly sweeped her arm and formed a curved spiked ice formation in the hallway, deterring some of the gunfire.
Anna and Yuudachi almost had to dive to the ground to reach Homura, but soon they, along with Mami, Elsa, and a very reluctant Chitoge managed to grab onto each other so that Homura could take them out of the prison's barrier and back to the outside world.
And so Homura did. As the tiny red light glowed, she turned her shield.
        Kzhkkk-WHOOSH!
As the cellblock surrounded the group in a dull gray wash, Homura reluctantly paused.
"I think we can call that a job well done," Elsa praised the group.
        "Woo-hoo!" cheered Anna.
Homura tapped the component that was among her shield's open shutters, and allowed the time-screw teleport to take them away.
        WWWwwwhhhSSSSSSHHHHHH...

*   *   *

Homura was sprawled in a sitting position on the inhibitor room floor. She noticed that the component had broken off her shield; not that she had much more use of it anyway. She began to hear the Fugitive's voice over the primary mental inhibitor...
"Hi again. So it was the... three of you who rescued those three from the Time Police, right? Pretty awesome what you did."
Homura could barely turn her head up to see Mami and Elsa in front of the inhibitor beside Engineer and his two robotic likenesses.
The Fugitive's voice continued, "But, yeah, even though that's been dealt with, we have a problem: You never told us you found a way to rescue them, and we could've helped you. Now I gotta ask: is there anything else you're not telling me?"
Homura could barely hear Mami's gasp.
"I mean, there's probably something you're not telling me. What is it?"
"Don't you have anything better to do?" asked Elsa.
"You know what? Just see me a month from now and maybe we'll talk about it," suggested the Fugitive.
That was the last thing Homura heard before she blacked out.
